Why You Need to Focus on Current Podcast Listeners
Today’s episode isn’t meant to be “ranty” or come off as I’m yelling at you. It’s a tough-love show today. Because, quite frankly, there are too many new podcasters out there focusing on the wrong things!
Many of you are focusing on growth, growth, growth as soon as you launch your podcast and not enough on the people that are already showing up for you right now. So instead of focusing on all of your future potential listeners, today I wanted to remind you of 4 ways to focus on current podcast listeners to make sure they’re coming back every single week.
-
Serving Your Audience
-
Engaging with Your Audience
-
Feedback from Your Audience
-
Retention
Now, let’s break these down one-by-one.
1. Serving Your Current Podcast Listeners
How are you showing up for the people already listening to you every single week? Are you serving them consistent value? Are you delivering content that’s worthy of them coming back again?
These questions matter.
Because before you can grow and scale a podcast, you must first focus on current listeners by serving them valuable content.
2. Engaging with Your Current Podcast Listeners
How are you engaging with your audience? Do you have a weekly email that you send out to your list regularly? Have created a welcoming online community to engage with your people?
Engagement is one of the key pillars of understanding your current audience. Speaking out into the void behind your microphone won’t get you very far. But taking the time to understand and actually listen to your listeners is how you will eventually grow and scale your podcast.

3. Feedback from Your Current Podcast Listeners
Much like engagement, feedback from your current listeners is super important! You need to know whether you’re on the right track, need to head in another direction, or you’re hitting the nail on the head every week.
And the best way to do that is to ask for feedback from your audience.
My favorite way to do this is with Instagram and Facebook stories. Simply put up options between two topics you want to talk about next or something related to your last few episodes and use the poll feature to have your audience vote on their favorites.
You can also email your list and have them reply with their feedback. (If you want to learn more about How to Grow an Email List with a Podcast, check out this episode.)
4. Retention
How will you get listeners to stay?
If you hadn’t noticed already, these 4 ways to focus on current podcast listeners are really building blocks. One block stacks on top of the other. And hopefully, by the time you get to this step, you’re already set up for success.
Retention simply means maintaining the audience you already have listening to you. (Make sure you check out the episode where we talked about what your podcast listeners are most likely paying attention to here.)
So focus on your current podcast listeners. Pay attention to what they need/want from you. Engage with them. Ask for feedback. And try to keep as many of the current ones you have.
