How to Handle Self-Promotion in an Interview

There’s a balance between being overly excited about what you do and being flat out spammy during an interview. Whether it’s a podcast, live stream, or an in-person interview, please don’t promote yourself every other word that comes out of your mouth.

There is a balance!

And I’m so glad we got this question from the community on the YouTube channel asking about self-promo during an interview:

There are two important things to consider when you want to name drop your stuff: a business, podcast, website, YouTube channel, IG handle, etc.

1. How can you mention your stuff in an organic way?

Throughout the entire interview, you should using words and phrases to describe what you do without ever mentioning the official name of your content or business.

If I wanted to talk about my podcast, I’d mention my show in these ways:

  • “As a host…”
  • “When I’m hosting guests on my show…”
  • “When I speak to my audience…”
  • “When I’m looking for guests to interview…”

Not once did I actually use the word the podcast or say “The Proffitt Podcast”, but it’s implied that’s what I’m talking about.

(Check out episode Episode 138, How to Be Selective with Your Podcast Guests to hear more about spammy podcast guests and how to avoid them!)

2. What strategic CTAs (calls-to-action) can you use at the end?

At the very minimum, you should be prepared to talk about your own content and do some self-promotion with a strategy CTA at the end of an interview.

This isn’t the time to tell the audience all of your social media handles, what your latest freebie is, and drop your website URL. That’s too much information!

Instead, have one place to send people to engage with you and make sure your funnel is setup properly to engage them across those other channels you want them to find.

(Make sure you listen to Episode 350, What is a Content Funnel Strategy? to learn more about how to engage with your audience along the way.)
