3 Important Podcast Interview Tips for Hosts

There’s nothing worse than listening to a podcast episode where the conversation has completely gone down a rabbit hole…that you can’t come back from!

Today’s episode is about how not to let an interview get away from you, and I’m sharing my three important podcast interview tips for hosts to use on their shows.

Whether you’re brand new to podcasting or looking for interview tips, all 3 of these offer tons of value in conducting better interviews for your audience.

Let’s break down my three important podcast interview tips for hosts:

1. Remember that you have the mic and it’s your show!

At the end of the day, you have the final say in how your show is produced. If you want to set the expectations with your guest on how you conduct your interviews, consider having a “pre-show” call to talk to your guest about those expectations. (Whether that’s a week before the interview or 15 minutes before you hit Record is totally up to you.)

2. Gently cut someone off during the interview.

Turn the conversation back to the topic at hand. You can use phrases like:
“I wanna get back to talking to about…”
“Let’s circle back around to…”

Use these types of statements to steer the conversation back to the topic you know your audience most wants to hear about.

 3. You have control over the final product.

Don’t be afraid to trim things down in the editing room if you feel that the interview didn’t stay on topic. Circling back to our first tip, you have the final say on what goes into your episode. You can choose to let the conversation go and then decide later what you’ll actually use for the final cut.
