4 Tips to Make You a Better Interviewer

1. Ask Better Questions

If you’re stuck in the middle of an interview and only asking questions that could possibly end in “yes” or “no”, then you need to start practicing asking better questions.

And if you need some more inspiration about asking better questions in your content, check out the YouTube video linked below.

2. Pay Attention to Interviews Your Love to Hear

One trick that I’ve learned in my content creation journey and one of the best tips to make you a better interviewer is to observe other interviews that make you lean in and say, “Wow! That was an amazing interview!”

Was it the cadence of the interview? Was it the host’s questions? Is it the casual way they phrase things?

Start paying attention to interviews — whether on TV, podcasts, or live streams — and take notes on what you can implement in your own content. I’m constantly listening to different podcast interviews and noting where I would love the host to go deeper with a guest and delighting when a host beats me to the question I’m already thinking about

And if you want to know more about being selective with the guests you have in your content, make sure you listen to this episode: Episode 138, How to Be Selective with Your Podcast Guests

3. Questions Your Audience Wants to Ask

It’s okay to come prepared with questions to an interview, but if someone mentions a topic you know your audience wants to know more about it, ask the question you know that they’re thinking!

For example, when I interviewed Amy Porterfield on the podcast I knew that my audience would get the reference when I asked her where she got her signature statement “If you’re multitasking, come back to me!”

Watch clips from our interview below or listen to the entire episode here: Episode 290, Podcast Monetization with a Digital Course, with Amy Porterfield

4. Be Genuinely Curious About Your Guest!

The best interviews come from a host taking the audience on a journey and asking questions that go deeper into a conversation where listeners really feel like a fly on the wall. And the only way to make those interviews go deeper is to be genuinely curious about your guest.

BONUS TIP

Find a model interviewer to follow and mold your style from what you love about them
