Business Planning Retreat 101
For the last three years, I’ve been had a “year-in-review and planning for the future” day that consisted of me, my calendar, and my imagination of what the future could look like. This year, I knew I wanted to get more strategic and more focused. And what better way to do that than to rent a cottage on a river with my mom!
We decided to go on a weekend-long retreat to plan out the next big steps in our business, but we actually walked away with was much bigger than that: focus! I tend to overcomplicate things sometimes and I realize I need to talk things out with someone else. My mom, who’s also in the process of building her online business, was the perfect person to have a business planning retreat with. Plus, #girlstrip!
Business Planning Retreat Supplies
As the date got closer and we prepared for our weekend retreat, I knew I wanted to take a few things to maximize our time, focus, and energy. Here’s what I made sure we had ready:
-
The Book “Traction” by Gino Wickman
- This was our guidebook for the entire weekend. We used this book to plan out our company core values, target market, focus on our niche, create our 10-year/3-year/1-year plans, and get laser-focused on the priorities that need to happen.
-
Large Sticky Pad with Markers
- These seemed a little like overkill when we first came up with the idea, but I’m so grateful we had these in that little cottage! While I love a good notebook or Google Doc to do some planning, there’s nothing like a large sticky pad for brainstorming and dreaming.
-
Layers of Clothes
- I mean, it is Fall in Texas! And the weather is wayyy too unpredictable. We needed everything from shorts and tank tops to a big puffer jacket…just in case!

Business Planning Retreat, Biggest Takeaways
Mom and I both had a ton of breakthroughs from this weekend! But here are the main ones I came up with Proffitt Media going into 2021 and beyond:
CORE VALUES
- We don’t just walk towards fun, we chase it!
- Authenticity is our top priority.
- Empathy, grace, and compassion are how we strive to hold space for everyone.
- We don’t hide problems. We face them and walk through them together.
- We commit to always learning how we can become better leaders.
- Consistency is the key to total domination.
- Value, service, and gratitude make up our North Star.
Core Focus
- Help entrepreneurs spread their message with confidence.
Niche
- Taking the overwhelm out of podcasting.
I wish I would’ve done this in the first year of my business. The intentional time is worth it. The focus is worth it. Having a clear picture of what your company’s goals are is worth it.
So, I encourage you to schedule your first (or next) business planning retreat.
