3 Reasons Why You’d Like to Take Time Off from Your Podcast

I don’t always recommend taking breaks from your podcast, but I get it. Not everyone wants to podcast 24/7/365 (like I do), so today I wanted to share with you 3 realistic reasons why you’d want to take time off from your podcast.

  1. Holidays

  2. Vacations

  3. Need a Break

So let’s dive into all 3 today!

1. Holidays

I love predictability! And planning for the holidays is one of the easiest things you can add to your content calendar every single year. Holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, and other annual celebrations show up the same time each year. AKA, you can plan for them!

So if you haven’t already done this, go and add ALL the holidays to your next year’s podcast content calendar.

Now, you don’t have the excuse of saying, “I didn’t know that it was the 4th of July!” Yes, you did!

Make sure you plan to take time off from your podcast so that you can actually enjoy yourself during the holidays!

2. Vacations

When was the last time you took a vacation? If you just said “10+ years”, it’s time. It’s time for you to plan for a vacation. Even if it’s a staycation in the town you’re living in, you need to take some time off to rejuvenate.

Similar to holidays, vacations are something you can plan for. Most people don’t go on vacations that they didn’t plan for, so make sure you mark them down on your podcast content calendar.

I plan for when I’m going to take time off from my podcast each quarter. Whether it’s a long weekend when the kids are out of school or we’re going on a quick trip to visit my parents, I plan to take time off.

Batching can help take time off your podcast for a vacation.

*Make sure you listen to this episode about batching your podcast to understand it a little better.

Have many recording options available when you’re planning to record your podcast when you’re on vacation. Whether it’s taking a portable recording device or recording on your phone, this is why I want you to not rely solely on recording your podcast in your “perfect” home studio setup.

*Check out these videos below to see how you can record your podcast on a portable device or directly on your phone.

3. Need a Break

Let’s be honest, we all just need a break from time to time. Whether you’re feeling burned out, overwhelmed, or that you just need to take a break for a second, you can absolutely take time off from your podcast! But I want to make sure you plan for it.

There are two options to do this really well:

  1. Seasons

  2. Shorter Episodes

DO NOT GHOST YOUR AUDIENCE!

If you’re going to step away from your podcast for a time period, then put out an episode stating, “This is the end of Season 1 and we’re be returning on [INSERT DATE] for Season 2.” Or put out a Bonus episode stating ending one season and when you’ll come back for the next season.

*If you’re considering whether to rebrand your show, make sure you listen to this episode.

The other option is to put out shorter podcast episodes. Maybe you don’t need to take time off your podcast, but you need to create shorter podcast episodes. No one ever said you couldn’t change the format of your podcast after you launched.

So if you’re feeling overwhelmed with the process, shorten up those episodes.
