WHAT’S THIS EPISODE ABOUT?

Question from the Community

There was a recent podcast question in an online community that went something like, “When do you release your blog post that goes along with the podcast episode? Do you publish it on the same day or publish it later?”

This is a totally valid question and one that we’ve talked about already when we’ve talked about show notes and podcast descriptions. (Make sure you listen to Episode 89 Podcast Descriptions and Show Notes and watch this video about it too!)

There are a few ways you can do this – depending on your goals, style, and your capacity to handle all of these different workflows. It’ll look different for someone who has an entire team of people than the solopreneur who’s doing all the things. And there are pros and cons to each option.

There’s isn’t just one right answer here. Choose what works best for you and your podcast.

1. Release Both Audio & Blog Post on the Same Day

This option works best if you want a place to send people. This is what I do – release the blog and podcast on the same day. Or another way to look at it: my podcast and the show notes. Example, KrystalProffitt.com/episode165.

Choose this option if you want to have a place for videos, images, and other important things going on within your website.

PROS:

CONS:

  • It takes A LOT OF TIME.
    • The reason why I create detailed outlines when I’m planning my content is to make creating my show notes so much easier. Writing isn’t super easy for me. So creating show notes is super hard unless I’ve created a detailed out. But it still takes me a while.
  • Must be organized.
    • This isn’t really a con so much as it is a personality trait. If you’re not organized, this option will be a lot harder for you.

2. Release Audio Earlier in the Week Then Release Blog Post Later

This would work if you wanted to release your podcast episode on Tuesday and then release a blog post on Thursday that week.

PRO:

  • It gives you more time to get your blog post (or article – whatever you want to call it) together.
    • But I wouldn’t reference this as your show notes because it’s not getting released on the same day as your podcast episode.

CON:

  • You’re probably going to confuse your audience if the content is identical but you released it the same week on different days.
    • People may ask, “Why didn’t this come out on the same day? Is this the same thing?”

3. Release Audio and Then Repurpose Later for Blog or Other Content in the Future

This would work if you have very brief podcast descriptions and your show notes aren’t very robust right now. If you find that one podcast episode is performing really well, you can take part of the episode or the whole and share it on other platforms like YouTube, social media, your email list, or other creative ways you want to share your content.

PRO:

  • It gives you more content to spread out over a longer period of time.
    • You have more margin in your calendar (and your brain!) to firmly get a handle on one platform before moving on to another.

CON:

  • Your audience won’t have show notes whenever an episode releases.
    • This doesn’t mean that you’re doing something wrong if all you do is put out your episode descriptions. But if you’re in a competitive category, having show notes when your episode airs can be a differentiating factor between someone listening to your show as opposed to another show.

To wrap up, not one of these options is the right answer. But it’s good to know you have options right? Just remember…

It all depends on your style, content, strategy, and how you want to create your podcast.
