WHAT’S THIS EPISODE ABOUT?

Explicit Content, AKA “4-Letter Words”

I just gotta come out and say it, “This is all totally subjective.”

There. Maybe you no longer have a need to read the rest of this, but that’s the overall message of this post.

What may be considered explicit to me may look like a baby goat running through a pasture of daisies to someone else. (I don’t know why or how a baby goat came into the picture, but that sounds super cute, right?)

Someone else may think that the word “damn” is awful and should be considered explicit, but I don’t.

It’s all subjective!

I’ve seen questions in many of the online podcast communities about what explicit content is and how you should mark your podcast episodes accordingly in your podcast host. So that’s what we’re talking about here today.

What to Do if You Don’t Want Explicit Content

Some interviews can go in a totally different way than you first imagined. You may start talking about topics or subjects you hadn’t originally thought to talk about, but you go with the flow, right?

But what happens if a guest starts throwing around expletives when you aren’t prepared for it? Trust me, it’ll happen one day if it hasn’t happened to you already.

There are a few options to get rid of “bad content” within a podcast episode:

  • BLEEP the content using your audio-editing software
  • CUT the content with your software

But if the cursing doesn’t bother you and won’t bother your audience, then I want to address another question I’ve seen by those who allow explicit content to live on their podcast:

Does Explicit Content Hurt My Podcast Ranking?

Here’s the Spotify definition:

Explicit Content

Here’s my take on how explicit content will affect your show rankings…it won’t.

How do I know this?

Well, if you look at the TOP 10 podcasts in the entire selection of Apple Podcasts, you’ll see that a lot of the episodes that continue to do well (we’re looking at you Joe Rogan) are marked “explicit content”.

So, no…having it in your podcast WILL NOT hurt your podcast ranking.
