WHAT’S THIS EPISODE ABOUT?

Do I Need Podcast Seasons for My Podcast?

Today, we’re diving into another great question from the community and that question is, “Should I have Podcast Seasons?”

And I’m just going to dive right into the answer…

It depends!

I know, not really a fair answer to start off with but let me explain.

Podcast seasons totally depend on your style and podcast subject matter. For example, I don’t have seasons for The Proffitt Podcast because that wouldn’t make sense for it. My podcast is one long, continuous season with over 120+ episodes.

What I talk about is mostly evergreen content surrounded by principles, strategies, and tips that will still be relevant 5 years from now…assuming we all aren’t living on the dark side of the moon by then.

Podcast Seasons Would Be Worthwhile If…

**You talk about a seasonal topic on your podcast.

For example, we just wrapped up the 2019-2020 football season. If you have a sports podcast about the specific season, then podcast seasons could work for you.

I’d imagine it would get confusing if you someone stumbled upon your podcast expecting to hear about a game that happened in 2017, but instead was listening to a podcast related to 2018. So set your podcast up according to how listeners would expect to search for a particular season.

**You want a fresh start each year.

This is an interesting approach, but I could see it working. Some podcasters want to start fresh on January 1 of a brand new year. So they decide to start a new season each year.

If this if your style and your format, I say go for it!

Word of Caution About Podcast Seasons…

Be very clear on your podcast if you have multiple seasons. You don’t want to confuse listeners with show notes for each episode. Here are some questions to ask or things to consider:

  • How will they be listed on your website?
  • How will someone know they’ve landed in the right episode? The episode number? The title?

Have a system in place for when a season will start and end. (After a certain number of episodes? A certain date? A specific time of the year? Etc.)
