How to Plan Podcast Episodes

Main Takeaways:

Plan ahead.

Plan strategically.

Have a long term goal.

Places to keep up with podcast ideas

Places to get podcast ideas

  • Screenshot questions in FB
  • Save FB posts that are super relevant!
  • Just listen to your audience
  • Who do you want your audience to be?
  • What does your audience want to hear?

Example from when I started The Rookie Life:

First 20 episode ideas, I knew what my ideal listener wanted to hear about: fitness, nutrition, home organizing, interior design, and other topics that my audience would be interested in.

Questions to Ask Yourself Through the Whole Process

  • What will add value to my audience?
  • Are you trying to entertain them or educate them?
  • Can you come up with 20 ideas? (That’s approximately 5 months worth of content if you publish once a week!)
  • Why are you creating this podcast?
  • Why do you want to start a podcast?
  • What’s going to keep you going?

Make sure that you’re keeping your audience in mind and when you’re creating content

How to Plan Podcast Content (Exact Steps)

1. Decide how often you’re going to publish podcast episodes.

  • Story of Nannette starting her podcast and publishing Monday-Friday when she first got started. Daily podcasts were too much, but once a week at a bare minimum is the best place to start.

2. Organize them in an editorial calendar.

  • Come up with them in a spreadsheet
  • Drop them in Google Calendar
  • Trello
    • Great for brainstorming
    • KanBan board planning within Trello
  • Asana
    • Task and project management
    • Can do KanBan board planning in Asana too!

3.  Planning Actual Episodes.

  • Batch plan your episodes.
    • Sit down and strategically plan multiple episodes at one time.
    • Create outlines, use templates within Google Docs, and then create a copy every time you create a new episode.
  • Sometimes when we’ve been out and about and I don’t have time to plan content, I create my outlines within a notebook and then later upload them into my Google Docs outline.

4. Have to stick to your calendar!

  • No exceptions! No excuses!
    • Keep publishing on the same day of the week! Just like Grey’s Anatomy comes out on TGIT. Thanks, Shonda Rhimes, for keeping it easy to remember!
    • Take your podcast that seriously!
  • If you start becoming flakey on your audience, they’ll start being flakey on you. We aren’t going to accept mediocre podcasts around here that flake out on people!
  • Produce content with your heart in it and to provide value to your audience.

RECAP: How to Plan Podcast Episodes

  1. Decide how often you’re going to publish podcast episodes.
  2. Organize them in an editorial calendar.
  3. Planning Actual Episodes.
  4. Have to stick to your calendar!
