When I first started podcasting, I didn’t pay attention to my categories. There I said it.
But you should know, I didn’t do A LOT of things right when I first started. However, I did finally figure it all out and I can’t wait to dive into all the nitty-gritty details today!
What I Learned About a Podcast Category & How Important It Is
Let’s talk about a few of the things that have changed since I first started thinking about a podcast in May 2018. The BIGGEST change came in August 2019 when Apple overhauled its categories.
But the thing I learned that changed everything was that my podcast was hanging out in the wrong category!
My podcast was in Business, Entrepreneurship, and Marketing.
Now, on the surface…those don’t look like bad ideas.
But in reality, they’re not specific enough to what actually goes down on this podcast. So let’s talk about the switch I made!
Why I Switched My Podcast Category
I could say that I had a major revelation and thought to myself, “This category just doesn’t fit for me. I need to change it.”
But that’s not what happened…
The reason I switched my podcast was that I’m part of the amazing BuzzSprout Facebook Community. Because when Apple made the BIG switch in categories, I had the guidance of the people in the group (wayyyy smarter than me) tell me where my podcast belonged.
I took their advice, analyzed the categories that made sense, and then went with my gut!

What Happened AFTER I Switched My Podcast Category…
Magic started happening when I finally showed up WHERE my podcast belonged. I actually started showing up in the charts for my podcast category.
To be very clear…

You should be where your ideal listener is looking for you.
