Podcast Editing Basics, 7 Functions for Simple Podcast Editing

This week’s episode starts with a question from the community about podcast editing basics.

Let’s dive right into Sasha’s question she submitted on our PodInbox page. (You can submit a question here too!)

Hi, Krystal. I love your podcast. I think you’re wonderful and you’re really inspiring. My problem is a technical one. It’s the editing. I just cannot figure it out. I don’t know what course to take to try to learn how to do audacity. I have great ideas for a podcast. I’ve done them. But I’ve never gotten anything past recording them because I can’t figure out the editing. So, um, thank you so much. Goodbye. – Sasha Viers

We don’t talk a lot about podcast editing basics here on the podcast because it’s reserved for the visual platforms, mostly YouTube or IG Reels. This is a common them that pops up when podcasters first get started. But, I’ve seen this question enough in our community that I need we need to at least cover the 7 functions every podcaster needs to know.

I was overwhelmed with editing back in the beginning and to be upfront with you, I never learned past many of the basic skills because that’s all you really need. You don’t need to be a sound engineer or someone who can mix tracks together in order to have a consistent podcast.

7 Basic Podcast Editing Function Every Podcaster Needs to Know

For today’s episode, I thought I’d open up Audacity and walk through the 7 Need-to-Know Functions for Basic Podcast Editing:

  1. Setting up your mic and adjusting the settings for your voice.
  2. Recording clips.
  3. Import additional audio files, like interviews and music.
  4. Zoom in and zoom out on the waveform.
  5. Adjusting sound levels.
  6. Cutting, splitting, and deleting clips of audio.
  7. Saving and exporting files.

If you still need help with editing, check out my Podcasting Editing Playlist on YouTube with videos on how to do basic editing in Audacity & Hindenburg, recording and editing, importing a Zoom file into Audacity, mixing tracks in Hindenburg, muting audio, and more!
