How to Start Content Creation: 5 Critical Questions Every Beginner Must Ask

Episode 526

Today, we’re answering a listener’s questions submitted via email from the welcome sequence we ask all new subscribers. Listen to how I answered those questions in today’s episode.

How to Start Content Creation

Should You Start with Audio or Video Content?

One of the greatest joys of running the Profit Podcast is connecting with listeners who reach out with thoughtful questions. Recently, a new subscriber sent in several excellent inquiries that I felt deserved a comprehensive response—not just for them, but for anyone navigating the sometimes confusing world of content creation.

The first question many aspiring podcasters wrestle with is whether to begin with audio-only or dive straight into video content. My advice is refreshingly simple: start with whatever format makes you most comfortable.

I began my podcasting journey with a humble $20 microphone and no video component whatsoever. This approach allowed me to develop my voice and content style without the added pressure of visual presentation. Video creation requires a different set of skills—maintaining eye contact with the camera, managing your expressions, and being aware of your physical presence. By contrast, audio-only allows you to read from a script if needed, giving you a safety net as you build confidence.

Remember that successful content creation is about sustainability, and starting with what feels comfortable increases your chances of sticking with it in the long term.

Best Design Tools for Content Creators: Beyond Canva

When it comes to design tools, many creators wonder if there are better alternatives to Canva. While professional designers might prefer the Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Premiere Pro, etc.), Canva remains my go-to recommendation for content creators.

I’ve been using it since 2015—starting with the free version for years before upgrading—and it handles everything from PDF designs and presentation decks to podcast thumbnails and promotional graphics. The beauty of Canva lies in its accessibility; you don’t need design expertise to create professional-looking assets.

For most content creators, investing time in learning more complex design software simply isn’t necessary when Canva can deliver what you need efficiently.

When to Start Monetizing Your Content

One of the most critical questions creators face is when to start monetizing their content. My stance on this is clear: if monetization is part of your long-term plan, start incorporating calls-to-action from day one.

These don’t have to be aggressive sales pitches—they can be as simple as:

  • Asking listeners to subscribe
  • Promoting a free resource download
  • Sharing an affiliate link
  • Encouraging reviews or engagement

The key is setting expectations with your audience from the beginning. I’ve seen creators lose trust when they suddenly switch from never promoting anything to actively selling products or services. Audiences respond poorly to this abrupt change in dynamic.

By making small asks from the start, you condition your audience to expect and accept that your content has a business component, making future monetization efforts feel like a natural evolution rather than a betrayal.

Using Patreon for Content Monetization

Regarding platforms like Patreon, while I don’t personally use it, I’ve seen many creators leverage it successfully. The key to Patreon success appears to be offering genuine value to subscribers through:

  • Exclusive content
  • Personalized interactions
  • Physical items like stickers or thank-you notes

The platform works particularly well for creators who want to monetize without disrupting their core content experience, as illustrated by my friend who runs a bedtime stories podcast and uses Patreon to avoid mid-episode advertisements that would disrupt the listening experience.

Finding Your Content Publishing Schedule

Finally, the question of posting frequency comes down to understanding what consistency means for you specifically. Whether that’s daily, weekly, monthly, or even quarterly content depends on your lifestyle, other commitments, and what you can realistically maintain over time.

What matters most is creating a content system that works with your life rather than forcing your life to revolve around content creation. This is precisely why I developed the PrepEm method—a systematic approach to planning and creating content that fits seamlessly into your existing routine, preventing burnout and supporting long-term consistency.
