How to Find Your Podcast Community
First off, you need to understand who your audience is or who you want them to be. So literally ask yourself the question: “Who is my audience? Or who do I want them to be?”
This could be an ideal listener or (ideal customer avatar) or could be the people that are already asking you for the content you’re creating.
But I want you to get VERY specific here!
Ask yourself these questions as you come up with who your ideal listener is:
- Age
- Gender
- Typical Demographics
- Married/single
- Kids
- What do they like to do for fun?
- What are their favorite TV shows or movies?
- What are their fave podcasts?
Then go a little deeper:
- What are some of their biggest dreams or fears?
- Where do they listen to podcasts?
- What are their biggest problems they face?
- How can you help them?
Where Does Your Potential Podcast Community Hang Out?
I want you to ask yourself how you can find your podcast community. Even if you don’t know many of your “ideal listeners” personally, you know where they hang out. Or better yet, where they DON’T hang out online. So ask yourself these questions:
- Where do they hang out online?
- What social platforms are they on
- Do they like YouTube
- Do they only get on LinkedIn?
- Do they love Twitter?
- Or are they just here for Instastories and occasional FB lives?
- FB Groups
Another thing to consider is where your community hangs out in real life.
- Where do they hang out in-person?
- Does your podcast topic revolve around an activity of some kind?
- There are lots of podcasts about action sports or hobbies… are there physical places you could potentially meet listeners?
- Are there conferences related to your podcast topic or something similar in your industry?
- I mentioned the story about children’s book authors and my first SCBWI conference.
- Is there already an audience out there that you can get in front of?
- Think of similar people in your industry or even complementary to what you do!
- EX: Health & Nutrition work really well together
- So if you’re a nutritionist, are there podcasts out there that focus on health and well being that you could start to get involved in?
- I know the answer is “YES” because there are tons of groups I’ve been asked to join that are related to just that topic alone!
- EX: Health & Nutrition work really well together
- Think of similar people in your industry or even complementary to what you do!
