WHAT’S THIS EPISODE ABOUT?
No Really, I Hate the Sound of My Voice!
Do you remember when you first heard yourself on a recording?
Maybe it was that Home Alone recorder (ya know the one from HA2: Lost in New York?), or on your house voicemail…or some silly home video that made you say, “OMG! Is that really what I sound like!?!”
Well, that’ll happen when you first start a podcast too.
But there are 3 important things to remember:
1. Valuable content is more important than how you sound!
Let me say that again, the value you deliver through your content is more valuable than how you and your voice sounds. It’s not about the fancy microphone. It’s not about using big words to make yourself sound smarter.
Although, I do like to use the word discombobulated from time to time to sound like I have a large vocabulary…but come on, you know I’m not fooling anyone! (Trust me, that can backfire on you REAL quick.)
2. Do minimal editing, then don’t listen to the episode again!
This is literally my editing process:
- Listen to episode or interview
- Cut any breaks or mistakes
- Save and done
After the final edits, I don’t listen to episodes again! Because remember, it’s not about me…and your podcast isn’t about you! It’s about the value you’re delivering to your audience!
3. Practice, Practice, Practice!
Makes me think, “My childhood coach got one really important concept into my brain. And that was telling me to Practice, Practice, Practice!”
Well, that and she’d always say to us, “One day you’re gonna pay someone to make you wanna work out!” (She was 100% right about that too!)
You’ll only feel more confident the more your practice!
Be sure to listen to Episode 55: How to Sound Like a Pro, Even When You’re Not.”
