4 Content Time Wasters You Can’t Afford

Stop losing hours creating your podcast episodes, YouTube videos, or blog posts with these 4 content time wasters you can’t afford.

Today’s episode is one that I needed to get off my chest.

It holds several key things I’d tell my younger, baby creator self back in 2018. And although she deserves as much empathy and compassion as the next brand new content creator, there were some things that she was doing that wasted hours each week!

Let’s break them down and walk through the 4 content time wasters you can’t afford.

1. Overediting my solo podcast episodes.

Why is it okay to hear normal conversations during a podcast interview, but it’s absolutely ridiculous that I was so harsh on myself editing my solo episodes. I don’t know why I thought it was OK to have “umms” or breath sounds when I interviewed someone, but it was a downright horrifying experience if it was a solo episode.

2. Proofreading and formatting episode transcripts.

I used to go through every line and check it for spelling, capitalization, and grammar, which took me hours and hours to do. It turns out people don’t even typically read the transcripts of my audio, and the ones created by my transcription tool, Otter.AI, do A- work — which is good enough for me!

3. Taking too long to choose the teaser content.

I get this question a lot, “Krystal, I want to create sound bites from my podcast episode or short video clips from my YouTube video, but it takes me forever to choose just the perfect clip. How do you decide?”

And if you’ve asked me this question or wanted to ask me this question, you will be frustrated with my answer. Because I’ll tell you, “Just pick something.” It doesn’t have to be the mind-blowing piece that gives away the best content you’re publishing or the aha moment you want people to have when they consume your content. It just has to be something.

People have told me, “It takes forever to listen to my full episode to find the nugget that’ll make all the difference.”

That’s too much work y’all! It shouldn’t take you longer than 5 minutes total to choose a sound bite from your podcast or a clip from a YouTube video. Creating the teaser might take a little longer if you’re getting fancy with the graphics or the video editing, but no longer than 30 minutes all in creating content teaser — for a podcast or YouTube video.

4. Perfectionism and overthinking your content will always be mind-blowing.

My expectations were unrealistic for the first 18 months of my content. I was comparing what I was doing to every other podcaster I listened to. I wanted to have high-quality show notes on a low budget. And I wanted to do it all myself.

It was completely unrealistic — and it wasted a ton of time.

I’ve learned over the years that I’m not going to blow your mind whenever I put out a piece of content. It’s just not statistically probable. But, I am comforted with the notion that your mind will be blown 15-20% of the time when you consume my content. And I’m okay with those odds.

Because let’s look at podcast content…

I’ve published more than 1,000 episodes at this point, and if I apply 20% to those, that means that 200 podcast episodes have the potential to blow your mind. 200 episodes. That’s amazing!

So stop beating yourself up trying to get everything perfect. Just keep publishing your content.
