Podcast Vs. YouTube, How They’re the Same and Different
Podcast Vs. YouTube, How They’re the Same and Different
Everything discussed today assumes that we’re talking about podcasting in its traditional form and not from a video podcast perspective.
Also, while we’re on disclaimers, by the end of this episode, you won’t have a clear answer to the question, “Should I start a podcast or a YouTube channel?” That’s not what this episode was created for. It was made to help you understand how they’re the same and how they’re different.
WAYS THEY ARE DIFFERENT
PODCAST
- Audio-only
- From the traditional sense, the visual component doesn’t require as much work.
- The audience consumes close to 80-90% of your entire episode.
- People discover new shows primarily by word of mouth marketing.
YOUTUBE
- Mostly video
- Need to work more on the graphics/thumbnails for videos
- More visually appealing — aka “clickable” on a website
- The audience may drop off if you don’t catch their attention in the first few minutes or even seconds.
- More searchable through Google and YouTube
SAME FOR BOTH
- Need to plan content
- Publish regularly
- It can be done as solo or interview episodes
- Editing style depends on the creator and their audience.
- Show notes or descriptions for both are essential.
- Both can be embedded into a blog post or other pages on your website.
At the end of this episode, my conclusion is that I love both platforms! But they each serve different audiences and different strategies — although the audiences and strategies may overlap.
