How to Write Better Content Titles

Don’t Be Lazy!

There are some dos and don’ts when it comes to naming content.

If you’re ready to learn how to write better content titles then there’s one piece of advice to listen to above all else: DO NOT COPY OTHER PEOPLE’S WORK!

I couldn’t help but get a little on my soapbox in today’s episode as we talked about why it’s a bad idea to use other types of content (that’s already gone viral or is a huge success!) in your content titles.

Not to mention any names, but I see this often with people creating spin off shows of other podcasts just by adding a single word to the beginning or end of the main title to slightly differentiate the content.

(Though I suspect their customized cease and desist order should be arriving in the mail any day now!)

If you’re copying content others have already done, you’re being lazy!

Instead, you should strive to create something original from your own point of view.

Now, I get asked all the time, “How am I supposed to stand out in an already [crowded niche, industry, genre, category, and so on]?” And here’s my answer…

Standing Out in the Crowd

How to REALLY Write Better Content Titles

The only way to stand out in a crowded market is to infuse more of your personality into your content! You do this by adding in your favorite coffee order, what you’re binge-watching on Netflix, the last book you read that changed your life, or your favorite place on Earth to travel.

Many content creators get wrapped up in the thought, In order to show up and be me…I have to share EVERYTHING about my life! And that’s just simply not true.

Make sure you listen to my interview with Zafira Rajan where we talked about how to infuse more of your personality into the emails you write to your list. Episode 258, Copywriting for Podcasters, Best Tips with Zafira Rajan. This same concept can be applied to the content you create for your podcast, YouTube channel or even the posts you write on your website.

Don’t be afraid to be yourself!

Here are a few examples from my content:

  • I talk about my favorite TV shows all the time on the podcast: Friends, The Office, Schitt’s Creek, Game of Thrones, or whatever else I’m into at the moment
  • I talk about my dog, Wall-E. I’ll feature him in my content, on my IG, and even in my YouTube video about my studio setup.
  • I talk about my obsession with coffeemore specifically, my almond milk lattes — and I’m usually drinking coffee or tea when I’m recording my YouTube videos.

You don’t have to share your social security number, the names of your kids and where they go to school, or any other personal info you don’t feel comfortable sharing.

But you’ve got to get comfortable sharing more of YOU in your content!
