How to Repurpose Podcast Content, Questions Answered

Taking Questions About Repurposing Podcast

Today’s episode is the Q&A you didn’t know you needed!

I’m diving into some of the questions I was asked at the 2021 She Podcasts LIVE conference. If you want to hear my whole talk and learn the “5 Major Keys to Repurposing Podcast Content”, go listen to Episode 300 here.

The questions I hear most often about content creation are centered around social media, sharing the same piece of content across platforms, and specific questions about batching.

Let’s dive into the questions I’ve heard — more than once — about how to repurpose podcast content.

“Tips & tricks to find great sound bites without listening to an episode again?”

No need to re-listen to an episode over and over again.

When I’m looking for great soundbites for The Proffitt Podcast, my go-to way to find them remembering where the “takeaway points” are in an episode. “Did I say that at the beginning, middle or end?” I’ll ask myself.

Or I’ll mark up that particular point in my notes so that I know to search for that particular audio clip. It’ll be the most impactful to share on social as I tease out the episode’s content.

Here’s a video I created where I also answer this question in more detail:

“Should you ever re-post old episodes?”

This is the question I get the most.

And I don’t think it comes from laziness, but more of a “what am I supposed to do next” approach.

And I get it. You get in a bind where you can’t regular on your regular day (because life happens) or you can’t get the episode edited in time. Things come up.

Sometimes posting an old episode is the only way people know how to repurpose podcast content.

In the episode, I share my take on this not being my favorite solution to the problem but a few creative things to do instead. I’m also aware that sometimes, you just have to do what you have to do.

Here’s a video I created where I talk about this in more detail:

“Re-use the whole episode or just specific pieces…”

This is a great question.

When you’re talking about repurposing podcast content, there are many ways to define what that means. And I’m a fan of what makes the most sense for you, your content, and your audience.

If short clips from a live stream you did would work better for a podcast episode, use that. If you created several interviews with experts and you want to compile a “Top 5 Tips from Experts” episode, go for it!

Make sure you listen to Episode 199 all about “Podcast Marketing: How to Promote Old Episodes”.

“What content repurposed to YouTube works well?”

I love this question!

The main reason I like to talk about the relationship between podcasts and YouTube is because — after 2 years — I finally created a system that works well for me.

There are a few options to create podcast and YouTube content:

  1. Create and record podcast and video at the same time
  2. Create video first and then strip the audio for a podcast
  3. Create podcast episode first — like a rehearsal — then record YouTube video about the same topic
  4. Create podcast episode (longer form) and then piece off that content into shorter video clips

But you have to decide which on will work best for you.

Listen to the full episode to hear my answers to these questions about how to repurpose podcast content:

  • If you use audio gram clips for IG posts, is that successful?
  • Could you talk more about how to batch create podcasts and what to be thinking about ahead of time in relation to repurposing those episodes?
  • What resources if any are available out there to learn more about listener habits?
  • Do you use audiograms for anything other than podcasts?
