The Secret to Success: Consistency in Podcasting and Online Business
Introduction
One of my favorite things about having an online business and working with podcasters, whether you’re just getting started or have been at it for a while, is discussing their journey. I love talking to people about their experiences, asking where they are, how I can help, and understanding the primary reason they are striving to make their online business or podcast work. It’s my absolute favorite thing to sit down with a student or a member of our podcast community and have a genuine conversation.
I recently had such a conversation with a student from my Proffitt Podcasting program. She provided some feedback that made my heart swell. I asked her what makes me different from other people she could be learning from. Her answer? “You’re so consistent.” That’s what we’re going to talk about today. So let’s get right to it.
What’s Your Secret?
I felt the intro might have been more dramatic than usual, right? Like you were probably thinking, “Oh, Krystal is going to make us wait 30 minutes to reveal the secret.” No, no, no. The secret isn’t hidden here. It’s consistency. We talk about consistency all the time because it’s one of the principles of my business, my podcast, and all the content I produce. If I commit to something, I am going to be consistent with it.
When I heard my student say that I was consistent, it made me incredibly proud. This validation was crucial for me because consistency is what I preach.
Consistency in Content Creation
Consistency is my secret weapon. It’s saying I’m going to do something and then doing it. Trust me, I know it’s easier said than done. When Friday rolls around, and it’s time for the weekly email, it can be stressful figuring out what to write. But I know I have to send that email because it’s Friday, and that’s what we do on Fridays.
Do you remember the movie Mean Girls? They had rules like, “On Wednesdays, we wear pink.” Similarly, in podcasting, consistency is key. If you say you’re going to show up on Tuesdays, show up on Tuesdays. If you commit to a Facebook Live every other Monday, stick to it. Consistency inspires your audience and builds trust.
The Importance of Consistency
The reason consistency is so important is because it shows your audience that they can rely on you. Some people only show up when they want to sell something. This creates distrust because your audience feels used. On the other hand, showing up consistently, even when you’re not selling anything, builds a strong relationship with your audience.
For instance, my husband, who’s on my email list, sometimes asks why I don’t always sell something in my emails. The point is to offer value consistently. Even when I’m not promoting anything, I still want to provide valuable content. This way, when people see my name, they expect something valuable, not just another sales pitch.
Consistency is Layered
Consistency isn’t just about frequency. It’s also about messaging. If you’re consistent in how often you post but not in what you say, you’ll confuse your audience. For example, if your podcast is about personal finance, don’t suddenly switch to corporate investments. Consistency in your message is as important as how often you deliver it.
For those who are new here, you’ll quickly learn that I don’t delve into the technical aspects of podcasting equipment. My focus is on the content and helping you feel confident behind the microphone. Fancy equipment won’t help if you don’t know what to say.
How I Stay Consistent
I stay consistent by maintaining a pool of ideas to choose from. I use Google Sheets and Asana to plan my episodes. Whenever I get an idea, I drop it into my Google Sheet. This way, I always have a list of topics to choose from when it’s time to plan and record.
Here’s a little behind-the-scenes info: I don’t always follow my content calendar strictly. If a topic doesn’t excite me, I choose another one from my list. This flexibility keeps me excited and engaged with my content. It’s like having ingredients for a favorite recipe always on hand. When I’m in the mood for something specific, I know I have everything I need.
The Role of Marie Forleo’s BSchool
Much of my content planning strategy comes from Marie Forleo’s BSchool, which I took in 2019. This program helped me understand how to create content that excites my audience. If you’re looking to start or grow your online business or podcast, BSchool might be a great fit for you. Enrollment for the summer session is open from July 20 to July 29, 2021. You can learn more about it and my bonus package at KrystalProffitt.com/bschool.
