The Joy of Podcasting: A Conversation with Toy Creator Azhelle Wade
Introduction
So, it’s not often that I tell my kids about what’s happening with my podcast, but today’s episode was a special exception. When I told my 12, 9, and 5-year-olds that I would be talking to a toy creator, they were over the moon! They know a bit about the online content creator space, mostly from the gamers they watch on YouTube like Dude Perfect and DanTDM. But a toy creator? That was something new and exciting for them. My eldest even got to say hi to today’s guest, making this episode extra special. So let’s get right to it. Welcome to the Proffitt Podcast, where we teach entrepreneurs how to start, launch, and market their podcasts. I’m your host, Krystal Proffitt, and I’m so excited that you’re here. Think of this show as the time-saving shortcut you’ve been looking for in the world of podcasting. So, let’s dive in!
Meet Azhelle Wade: The Toy Coach
Background and Achievements
Today’s guest is the incredible Azhelle Wade, also known as the Toy Coach. Since our initial interview back in May, she has been absolutely crushing it in her business. Azhelle is a consultant for popular toy companies of all sizes and runs the Toy Creators Academy, an online course that empowers newbies in the toy industry with step-by-step guidance, downloadable worksheets, and group coaching. She also has her own podcast and recently launched a membership podcast, which we discuss in detail.
The Excitement of Being a Toy Coach
My sons were thrilled when they heard I was talking to someone whose job is to think about toys all the time. When I told them about Azhelle, my eldest exclaimed, “Wait, you’re talking to a toy creator?” Their excitement was palpable, and it made this conversation even more special.
The Journey of a Toy Coach
From Toy Designer to Industry Leader
Azhelle worked in the toy industry for 10 years, starting as a toy designer and climbing the corporate ladder to become a VP at various companies like Toys “R” Us, Madame Alexander, and Horizon Group USA. She has a toy design degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology and has created a niche for herself by consulting for toy companies and teaching others how to enter the industry.
The Birth of the Toy Coach Podcast
The idea for the Toy Coach came to her after realizing there was a gap in the market for accessible toy industry education. At a toy industry event, she met aspiring toy creators who needed guidance. This inspired her to start the Toy Coach podcast, “Making It in the Toy Industry,” to provide actionable, clear advice for people looking to break into the toy industry.
The Importance of a Podcast Main Theme
Why You Need One
A podcast main theme is crucial for branding and consistency. It introduces your show, sets the tone, and helps listeners recognize your podcast immediately. When I first started, I recorded my intro 19 times to get it just right. Now, I have a pre-recorded theme that I use for every episode, which saves time and maintains consistency.
Keeping It Short and Sweet
Your main theme should be concise, ideally between 15 to 45 seconds. My current theme is 33 seconds, which includes music and my spoken intro. Keeping it short ensures that listeners stay engaged and don’t skip over the intro.
Engaging Your Audience
Using Social Media and Groups
Azhelle shares her journey of using LinkedIn and Facebook groups to promote her podcast and engage with her audience. By consistently posting and encouraging interaction, she was able to build a community of loyal listeners. She emphasizes the importance of asking for reviews and using family and friends to help boost visibility.
The Power of Reels
Azhelle’s Instagram reels are a hit. She creatively uses them to share behind-the-scenes content and educational snippets, making her content engaging and relatable. If you’re looking for inspiration for your own social media strategy, her account is a must-follow.
Launching a Private Podcast
What It Includes
Azhelle recently launched the Toy Coach Podcast Insiders Club, a private feed that includes extended podcast episodes, a video library, bonus Q&A episodes, and access to a clubhouse club called the Toy Collective. This private podcast offers more in-depth content for listeners who want to dive deeper into the toy industry.
The Technical Setup
She uses Hello Audio in conjunction with MemberVault to manage her private podcast, finding the integration user-friendly and effective for her needs. This setup allows her to provide exclusive content to her members while maintaining a streamlined workflow.
Behind the Scenes: Podcasting with Purpose
Overcoming Challenges
Azhelle shares the highs and lows of her podcasting journey, from the excitement of being featured on major platforms like Access Daily to the challenges of maintaining motivation and dealing with unexpected setbacks.
