How to Spend $1,000 to Grow Your Podcast

Intro: Today, we’re diving into a community question: “If someone gave you money to grow your podcast, how would you use it?” Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced podcaster, this question can inspire you to think creatively about your podcast’s future. So, let’s get into it!

Welcome to the Proffitt Podcast, where we teach entrepreneurs how to start, launch, and market their podcast. I’m your host, Krystal Proffitt, and I’m excited you’re here. If you’re navigating the world of podcasting, consider this show your time-saving shortcut. Let’s jump right in!

Scenario…

First off, I love this question because I’m a dreamer. I enjoy setting big goals and exploring “what if” scenarios. So, if someone gave you money to grow your podcast, how would you use it? Imagine someone Venmo-ed you a substantial amount, say $1,000, and asked you to invest it in your podcast. What would you do?

Reinvest in Your Podcast

A popular answer in the podcasting community is to reinvest in your podcast. But what does that mean? Some specific suggestions include hiring a video editor, upgrading equipment, or bringing on a social media manager.

Video Editor

Hiring a video editor is a fantastic idea, especially if you want to create clips from your podcast recordings or enhance your YouTube presence. Depending on their expertise and the scope of work, a video editor could handle a few projects for a few hundred dollars. This investment can significantly improve your content’s quality and reach.

Upgrade Equipment

Another suggestion is upgrading your equipment. While important, I wouldn’t recommend spending the entire $1,000 on equipment. You could get a decent microphone, a boom arm, and some acoustic panels without breaking the bank. Remember, great content is more important than fancy equipment. A $500 microphone won’t fix poor content.

Hire a Social Media Manager

Hiring a social media manager can help you expand your reach and engagement. A skilled manager can handle your social media posts, create graphics, and interact with your audience, freeing up your time to focus on content creation. Hiring someone at a higher rate but for fewer hours can be more effective than hiring a less experienced person for more hours.

Advertising and Marketing

Investing in advertising and marketing can also be a wise use of $1,000. Here’s a breakdown of some strategies:

Facebook Ads

Facebook ads can be effective for promoting your products and services, but they might not be the best option for growing your podcast audience. You could be wasting money on ads shown to people who don’t listen to podcasts. However, if your goal is to drive traffic to a specific product or service, Facebook ads can be useful.

Spotify and Podcast Player Ads

Advertising on podcast platforms like Spotify or Overcast is more targeted. These platforms already have podcast listeners, making it more likely that your ad will reach people who are interested in your content. This approach can yield a higher conversion rate compared to social media ads.

Avoid Spammy Advertising

Be wary of spammy advertising offers that promise features in major publications for a fee. These often don’t provide the value they claim and can be a waste of your money. There are more authentic and effective ways to get media attention without paying for it.

Outsourcing and Tools

Outsourcing tasks to freelancers or using software tools can also be a smart investment.

Virtual Assistants and Freelancers

Hiring a virtual assistant or freelancer for specific tasks can save you time and improve your podcast’s quality. Whether it’s editing, creating show notes, or managing social media, outsourcing can allow you to focus on content creation.

Software Tools

Invest in software tools that streamline your podcast production. Tools like transcription software, scheduling tools, and audio editing software can enhance your workflow and improve the quality of your episodes.

Conclusion

In summary, if someone gave you $1,000 to grow your podcast, consider these options:

  1. Upgrade your equipment moderately.
  2. Hire a video editor or social media manager to improve content quality and reach.
  3. Invest in advertising on podcast platforms for better targeting.
  4. Outsource tasks to virtual assistants or freelancers.
  5. Utilize software tools to streamline your production process.

I’d love to hear your thoughts! If you were given $1,000, how would you use it to grow your podcast? Share your ideas in our Facebook group or tag me on social media.
