Conquering Stage Fright: A Journey from Dorm Room President to Professional Speaker
Hey there, fellow podcast nerds! Today, I’m excited to dive into a topic that’s close to my heart: the journey to overcoming stage fright and stepping confidently into the spotlight. As someone who has walked the path from cheerleader to podcast host, I’ve got some stories and tips to share that just might inspire you to tackle your own speaking fears. So, grab your favorite beverage, get comfy, and let’s embark on this journey together!
What Is Stage Fright?
Before we jump into the nitty-gritty, let’s define stage fright. Stage fright is that paralyzing fear that makes your palms sweaty, your voice shaky, and your heart race like you’re in a horror movie. It’s a feeling that many people experience, and it can be a significant barrier to speaking in front of an audience. But here’s the thing: stage fright doesn’t have to hold you back from shining.
Stage fright is a real thing, but I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be the monster under your bed. I’ve been fortunate enough to avoid it for most of my life, but I understand that not everyone is wired that way. Whether it’s the nerves before a big presentation or the fear of stumbling over words, stage fright is something many people battle. But fear not! You can conquer it with practice, preparation, and a few tricks up your sleeve.
My Speaking Journey
My journey into the world of public speaking began at a young age, thanks to my role as the baby of the family. Growing up as the youngest sibling, I had a natural inclination to seek attention and shine in the spotlight. Whether it was performing cheerleading routines for hours on end or speaking in front of my classmates as the student council president, I embraced every opportunity to take the stage.
Fast forward to college, where I became the president of my dorm. Yes, you read that right! I put my hand up to become the president of my dormitory, and I absolutely loved it. This role allowed me to lead meetings, plan events, and step into leadership positions that prepared me for the journey ahead.
During my college years at Texas State University, I worked as an assistant to the director of the student center. This role opened doors for me to organize events, lead meetings, and even emcee banquets. My love for speaking and connecting with people grew stronger, setting the stage for the exciting opportunities that lay ahead.
Embracing the Spotlight
As I transitioned into the world of podcasting, the skills I developed over the years came in handy. From speaking at church groups and MOPs (Mothers of Preschoolers) meetings to hosting webinars and virtual summits, I’ve had the privilege of stepping onto various stages to share my passion and knowledge.
One of the highlights of my speaking journey was meeting Erin Brockovich during a college event. It was a surreal experience that reminded me of the incredible opportunities that can arise when you embrace the spotlight.
The key takeaway from my journey is that it’s not about the size of the stage—it’s about the impact you make on your audience. Whether you’re speaking to a small group or a large crowd, what matters most is the message you deliver and the connection you create.
How My Journey HASN’T Been
While my journey may seem like a series of seamless transitions, it’s important to acknowledge that it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. Like many of you, I’ve faced challenges, doubts, and moments of uncertainty. There were times when I questioned my abilities and wondered if my message was resonating with my audience.
But here’s the truth: success doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a journey of growth, learning, and continuous improvement. I’ve learned that it’s okay to stumble, make mistakes, and pivot along the way. What matters is the resilience to keep moving forward and the willingness to learn from every experience.
Overcoming Stage Fright: Tips and Tricks
If you’re struggling with stage fright, know that you’re not alone. Here are a few strategies that have helped me and others overcome the fear of speaking:
- Practice, Practice, Practice: The more you practice, the more comfortable you’ll become. Rehearse your speech or presentation in front of a mirror, record yourself, or enlist the help of a friend for feedback.
- Visualization: Imagine yourself on stage, delivering your message confidently and passionately. Visualization can help calm nerves and boost your self-assurance.
- Breathing Exercises: Deep breathing exercises can help reduce anxiety and keep you centered. Take a few deep breaths before stepping onto the stage to calm your nerves.
- Focus on the Message: Shift your focus from yourself to the message you’re delivering. Remind yourself of the value and impact your message can have on your audience.
- Embrace Imperfection: Remember that perfection is not the goal. Authenticity and connection are far more valuable. Embrace imperfections and be yourself.
