When I first started my podcast and online business, I thought the most exciting parts would be the big moments—launches, new episodes, and milestones. But what really gets me fired up are the nerdy, behind-the-scenes details. I love hearing about the inner workings from other content creators, and today, I’m diving deep into one of those behind-the-scenes aspects: your communication plan for your podcast. So, let’s get right to it!

What is a Communication Plan?

The very first question is, what is a communication plan? If you’re a beginner podcaster, you might be thinking, “Communication? What are you talking about?” Don’t worry, we’ll break it down. A communication plan is essential for promoting your podcast, engaging with your audience, and making everything flow smoothly. If you’re a seasoned podcaster and you’ve never thought about having a communication plan, this is also for you. It can make marketing your show much easier and help you create a deeper connection with your audience.

How Will Your Potential Audience Hear About Your Podcast?

The basics of a communication plan start with the fundamental principles of marketing. Ask yourself, how will your potential audience hear about your podcast? Here are a few ways to consider:

  1. Word of Mouth Word of mouth is incredibly powerful. Encourage your listeners to share your podcast with others who might enjoy it. You can include calls to action in your episodes, like, “If you know someone who would appreciate this discussion, text them this episode.” Simple and effective, word of mouth should not be underestimated.
  2. Social Media Social media is an obvious but crucial component. Platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn are great for promoting your podcast. Share behind-the-scenes content, reasons why you chose a particular topic, or insights about your guests. Avoid just saying, “Go listen to my podcast.” Instead, explain why your audience should tune in. For example, “This week’s episode dives into creating a communication plan that can help you engage better with your audience.”
  3. Paid Advertising Paid advertising is an option, but it’s not recommended for beginners. Unless you’re well-versed in Facebook ads, Google ads, or other types of paid advertising, you might end up wasting your money. It’s a strategy for when you’re more experienced and have a clear plan.
  4. Email List Your email list is a powerful tool. If you don’t have one, start building it. Use it to promote your latest episodes and engage with your audience. Offer valuable content, not just self-promotion. Create freebies related to your podcast topics to entice people to join your list.

How Can You Take it One Step Further?

Once you’ve identified how to reach your audience, think about how you can engage them more deeply. This is the next layer of your communication plan. Move your audience from passive listeners to active participants by encouraging them to join your email list or Facebook group. This allows for two-way communication and deeper engagement.

Where Can You Engage with Your Audience?

Determine the best places to engage with your audience. Whether it’s a Facebook group, email, or another platform, find where your listeners are and actively engage with them. Ask for feedback, encourage discussions, and build a community.
