WHAT’S THIS EPISODE ABOUT?
Let’s Talk About Podcasting with Ben Krueger
Ben Krueger has been an expert in podcast production and strategy for many years! And I feel so grateful to have found a new friend and colleague to geek out on podcasting with! Here are a few quick takeaways from our conversation.
What was podcasting like in the beginning?
The accessibility of podcasting has dramatically changed! Even though there were some of the same tools we still see today, it’s a lot easier to get started now than it was 10+ years ago!
What’s the biggest change you’ve seen with podcasting in the last 12 months?
“You can’t really show up with a super broad topic podcast anymore and expect to get any lion share of the download market. Unless you’re bringing that audience with you…
I’ve seen the biggest shift being the general influx of types of shows and new podcasts being launched, which is fantastic!…
Yes, there are a lot of shows, but that doesn’t mean that the opportunity is gone.”

How Can I Make a Podcast About My Industry When It’s “Boring”?
Start with finding the core information people are looking for. Perfect example, a dentist wanting to start a podcast. Who are your listeners? Do you want to talk to potential families that could one day lead to clients? What could you talk about to attract those ideal listeners? As a dentist, you could offer information to your target audience,
“If you can solve one fundamental problem for one group of people – one tightly narrowed group of people – and that problem that you solve is something that they work on an ongoing basis to improve or to understand better or to shift their mindset around…”
Let’s Talk About the Business Side of Podcasting
As a business owner, the highest value is nurturing the relationship with your existing audience. There’s no risk for clients finding you and listening to your podcast. Clients are more likely to buy from you when they know a little bit about you and a podcast is an easy way for people to get to know you on a deeper level quickly.
What Are Some of the Biggest Obstacles that Your Clients Have Seen?
There are definitely some trends when it comes to people getting tripped up and getting stuck.
“I’ve heard this hundreds if not thousands of times and it’s the ‘I have an idea for a podcast…but I haven’t gotten around to starting it yet’.”
People keep putting it off on the back burner because they want to do it right. Their typical reasons behind not just getting started are:
-
I don’t have the time.
-
I’m intimidated by the tech.
-
I want it to actually produce results and I don’t want to put all of this effort into it and it flops.
The solutions to these problems?
-
Get help! There are lots of options out there to help you if you don’t have the time to get going.
-
Use a service that helps you out and allows you to be the content expert.
-
For the tech piece, start simple and make the first pass. Try something and get it out there!
-
Pick one person and follow their advice.
