What is Affiliate Marketing?
Before we dive into all the wonderful ways your podcast can start making money with affiliate marketing, we have to first establish what we’re talking about here. The definition that made the most sense to me when I first got started is from NeilPatel.com…
“Affiliate marketing is the process of earning a commission by promoting other people’s (or company’s) products. You find a product you like, promote it to others and earn a piece of the profit for each sale that you make.”
In other words, it’s telling someone about a product and earning a commission.
Where is the Easiest Place to Start with Affiliate Marketing?
When I first got started with my online business, I knew I wanted to make money long before I had millions of website visitors or thousands of downloads for the podcast. But how? Where was the easiest place to get started?
Did you answer Amazon?
Because if you did, you’d be correct. Though in recent months they’ve dropped their commission payouts, you can still earn money through Amazon’s Affiliate Program. (Learn more about it and sign up for free here.)
If Amazon doesn’t suit your needs for companies to work with, then I encourage you to look at companies, products, and services you already love!
- What books do you love?
- Is there a certain notebook you recommend to everyone?
- Are there services you couldn’t live without?
- Is there an online program that changed your life?
WORD OF CAUTION: Don’t ever endorse things you haven’t tried yourself. It can crush your credibility with your audience if you suggest a crappy product or a slimy company thinking it would be a good fit for them. Stick to products, services, and programs that you know will get your audience the results they’re looking for when you start looking at affiliate opportunities.
Before we really dive into all things affiliate marketing, there is something very important you need to know. When you are linking to any URL that has the potential for you to make money when someone clicks on it, you need to disclose that it’s an affiliate link. Check out the FTC guidelines here.

How Do You Find Affiliate Marketing Programs?
When it comes to finding the right company for you and your podcast, look at the programs you already use and love. Now I know this is going to sound super simple, but it’s exactly what I do any time I’m curious if a company has an affiliate marketing program.
Google the company’s name and the words “affiliate program”. It’s how I found out about Amazon’s affiliate program way back in the day.
