Today, we’re diving into another great question from the community and that question is, “How long should my podcast intro be?”
First, let’s define what the “podcast intro” actually is…
What is the Podcast Intro?
The podcast intro is the first snippet of audio a listener hears when they start your podcast episode. And there are 3 very important aspects to an amazing podcast intro.
INTRO = HOOK, MAIN THEME, INTRO TO EPISODE
My formula is to make the HOOK of the episode as interesting as possible. This sets listener expectations. And I love getting my listeners into a great emotional state. Phrases like…
“I’m so excited about this episode” to get them excited…
“I can’t wait to dive into what we’re talking about today” to pique their interest…
I also like to set the listener expectation so that we don’t waste anyone’s time. I want someone to listen to the first few seconds of the podcast and either say, “Yes! I’ve been waiting for this episode…” or “Nah, this just isn’t for me today.”
I know that sounds a little counterproductive. “Shouldn’t we want them to listen to every single episode every time we put one out?” And I see your point.
But I also want to make sure my episode is resonating with the people listening to it.

How Long is the Podcast Intro?
My default advice is “Make it as long as it needs to be but as short as possible!” You don’t want to ramble on and on about yourself for minutes.
No one wants to hear you talking about yourself!
So keep it short, sweet, and to the point!
It’s All Subjective…
I can tell you all day long my thoughts on creating an amazing podcast intro. I can tell you down to the second how long it needs to be, the formula to follow, and exactly what to say.
But at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what I think.
It’s all subjective.
What my audience loves…
Your audience may hate.
What someone else’s audience finds offensive…
Your audience may find hilarious or relatable.
So go with your gut.
Do what feels right…
